Where Texas Hill Country Fits on the Dark-Sky Map
Texas has some of the darkest skies in the lower 48 — but most of them are a long way from anywhere. The famous ones sit out in the Trans-Pecos: the McDonald Observatory and Big Bend National Park, both roughly seven to eight hours west of the I-35 corridor. The Farm Texas sits in the Hill Country sweet spot near San Marcos, where the skies are dramatically darker than any city backyard yet still a short drive from Austin and San Antonio.
On the Bortle scale that astronomers use to rate night skies, dense city centers sit at 8–9 (only the moon and a few planets cut through). Our 15 rural acres read closer to a 4 on clear, moonless nights — dark enough that the Milky Way arches overhead from late spring through early fall, and bright enough star clusters like the Pleiades show real structure to the naked eye.
You do not need a telescope to make it worthwhile. A reclining chair, a red flashlight to protect your night vision, and twenty minutes for your eyes to adjust are enough to pull hundreds more stars out of the dark. If you want to plan around the calendar, the Perseids peak in mid-August and the Geminids in mid-December — both put on a genuine show from the property when the moon cooperates.
