A Dark-Sky Escape 25 Minutes from New Braunfels
New Braunfels is built for daytime — Schlitterbahn, the Comal and Guadalupe rivers, the dance halls of Gruene. What it does not have is a quiet, dark place to end the night. The Farm Texas is about 25 minutes northwest near San Marcos, far enough past the lights of town and the I-35 corridor that the stars come back out over our 15 acres.
That distance makes for an easy split day: tube the Comal or catch live music at Gruene Hall in the afternoon, then trade the crowds for a fire pit and an open sky. By the time your eyes adjust, the constellations that were invisible over downtown are sharp overhead, and on clear summer nights the Milky Way shows up to the south.
Bring a red-light flashlight if you have one (it keeps your night vision intact), pick a night close to the new moon for the deepest dark, and give yourself a clear view east and south across the pasture. The dome hot tub and the farmhouse fire pit both work as comfortable, unhurried places to watch the sky.
