Why the Skies Are So Dark Just Outside San Marcos
San Marcos sits in the gap between two glow domes — Austin to the north, San Antonio to the south. Downtown itself washes out the faint stars, but drive ten minutes out to our 15 acres off Old Bastrop Road and you leave most of that light behind. The result is a sky that feels a world away from the river-town bustle, without the long haul out to far West Texas.
The clearest, driest viewing tends to land in fall and winter, when cool fronts scrub the humidity out of the air and Orion climbs high over the pastures. Summer nights trade a little crispness for the payoff of the Milky Way core rising in the south — best caught after the moon sets on nights near the new moon. Either way, the open pasture to the east and south of the domes gives you a low, unobstructed horizon.
It pairs naturally with a daytime San Marcos trip: float the spring-fed river or browse the Premium Outlets in the afternoon, then come back to the farm, let your eyes adjust over the fire pit, and watch the sky fill in. The hot tub by the dome makes a comfortable front-row seat once it gets dark.
