Is this a good day trip from Austin?

The drive passes through San Marcos with outlet shopping and the beautiful San Marcos River for tubing. Wimberley's shops and wineries are just 20 minutes away. Many guests explore these spots during their stay.

Getting Here from Austin — Routes and Timing
From central Austin, the straight shot is I-35 south to the San Marcos area, typically about 45 minutes outside of rush hour. If I-35 is backed up — which it often is between Slaughter Lane and Buda — SH-130 (the toll road) on the east side is the reliable alternative, looping you around the worst of the congestion before you cut back west toward the farm.
Because it is a short, low-commitment drive, a lot of our Austin guests treat it as a one-tank reset rather than a big expedition: leave after work on a Friday and you are watching the sun set over the pasture before dark. Coming from north or west Austin, leaving before 3pm or after 7pm will save you the heaviest I-35 stretch.
The location also makes a good base for the wider Hill Country. Wimberley and its galleries and swimming holes are about 25 minutes west, the spring-fed San Marcos River for tubing is 15 minutes away, and the wineries along US-290 toward Driftwood and Dripping Springs are an easy afternoon loop before you head back to the animals and the hot tub.
